Event

1. Snana Yatra (Snana Purnima)

A sacred bathing festival where Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are ritually bathed with 108 pots of water outside the temple before Rath Yatra season begins. The deities are then placed in a special hidden room (Anavasara) and are not visible to devotees for around 15 days.

2. Chandan Yatra

A 42-day sandalwood festival that marks the start of preparations for Rath Yatra, including ceremonial boat rides of the deities and public processions.

3. Ratha Yatra (Chariot Festival)

The most iconic event in Puri — Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are taken out of the temple and transported on massive, decorated chariots through the city to the Gundicha Temple.

4. Bahuda Yatra

The return journey of the deities from the Gundicha Temple back to the main Jagannath Temple, concluding the Rath Yatra festivities.

5. Niladri Bijaya

The final day of the Ratha Yatra season, marking the re-installation of the deities in the sanctum after their return.

6. Suna Besha (Golden Attire)

The deities are adorned in golden ornaments and special attire on several auspicious days throughout the year.

7. Nabakalebara (Navakalevara)

A rare ritual (occurring every 8–19 years) where the wooden icons of Lord Jagannath and the other deities are replaced with new ones and re-installed in the temple sanctum.

8. Gupta Gundicha

A 16-day festival where the deity Madhaba (Durgamadhaba) is paraded around temple surroundings and taken to a nearby shrine before returning.
